Sara Beadle’s Hershey Bar birthday cake

My sister in law Laura’s 40th birthday fell the same weekend that we were having a family reunion in Walker. (celebrating my grandmother’s life and her memorial service). So Sara volunteered to make the cake! It was soooo good, everybody wanted the recipe. So here it is, straight out of the Hershey cookbook.

1 8-oz milk chocolate bar
1/4 c butter
1 2/3 c boiling water
2 1/3 c flour
2 c brown sugar (I think this much sugar makes a cake that’s waaaaay too sweet – next time I make it, I’m cutting it down to just 1 cup!)
2 t baking soda
1 t salt
2 eggs
1/2 c sour cream
1 t vanilla

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour your pans.

Combine chocolate, butter and boiling water in a medium bowl until chocolate is melted. In the bowl of your stand mixer, combine dry ingredients. Gradually beat in chocolate mixture, then the rest of the ingredients. Beat 1 minute on medium speed.

Bake for 35 minutes. Cool completely, then frost as desired.

Chocolate Buttercream Frosting

1/2 c softened butter
3 2/3 c powdered sugar
1/2 c chocolate syrup
4 oz milk chocolate, melted
2 – 3 T milk

Cream the butter and sugar, add chocolates. Stir in milk until the frosting is a spreadable consistency.
